What is a Pest?

Brief Description:
Students will explore pests. This exploration will include insects, spiders, rodents, weeds, diseases, fungi, mites, nematodes and other organisms out of place or interfering with human activities. They will explore folklore, poetry, diseases, and culture as it relates to animals considered pests. Students will use pests to write creatively, conduct a survey and graph the results.

Objectives: Students will be able to:

  1. Define and describe pests.
  2. Describe pest categories and categorize pests into the appropriate category.
  3. Explore folklore and arts as it involves one segment of pests; insects.
  4. Use the Internet to obtain information about pests and their influence on human history.


Introduction: 10 minutes plus a weekend to accomplish the survey (scavenger hunt) assignment
Activity One: two, 45 minute class periods
Activity Two: 30 minutes
Activity Three: 45 minutes plus time for Internet or library research
Activity Four: 45 to 60 minutes
Activity Five: 30 to 45 minutes
Activity Six: 45 to 60 minutes plus time for Internet research
