Travel: Yesterday or Today?

Brief Description:
This lesson begins the process to teach students how plants, animals and pests began their global journey with early explorers and settlers. It also begins the process to make students aware of the impact of rapid global trade and travel today. This concept will be reinforced in higher grades to explore the rapid transportation of insects, diseases and other invasive pests though air travel and global trade.

Objectives: By the end of this unit the students will be able to:

  1. Identify that there is an ocean between America and Europe;
  2. Select the family and transportation that represents both past and present;
  3. Explain that travel in the past was much slower than it is today; and
  4. Select and sort the goods that travelers would have to take to meet their needs.
