Fall Teacher Workshop & Farm Tour

Fall Teacher Workshop & Farm Tour

We had a great time educating teachers about Florida Agriculture at our Common Core on the Florida Farm Workshop and Farm Tour.  Our teachers had one day of learning about different ways they can incorporate agriculture in their classrooms, giving students real world application of science, math, social studies and language arts skills they are already learning.  Each teacher took home 4-5 lessons, a Gardening for Grades book and 6 Make n Take Activities. Day two we visited a cotton and peanut farm where Mr. Larry Ford taught us about growing these commodities and showed us how the machine harvested and collected the peanuts and cotton.  Next we went to the Cloverleaf Cotton Gin and watched how the machines took the cotton from the plants, separated and cleaned the cotton and then balled up the cotton to be sent on to the next step.  This was something none of us had ever gotten to experience before and Mr. George did a great job explaining and answering all of our questions.  Our third stop was the Cindale Dairy.  Meghan and Brad Austin were our tour guides and they work the family farm along with Meghan’s parents who started the farm.  They showed us every step of what goes on in a dairy and even let some of us help milk the cows.  Everyone learned a lot and it could not have been possible without the great support of those involved in Florida Agriculture.
